Dear AVIV of Arizona Member,

Happy New Year 5774.

The ten day period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is the time that we repent for our sins, but also a time for us to get closer to our lord, our G-D.  Making a commitment to community service within the Jewish community is one way of accomplishing this important task.  I ask you to consider involvement with AVIV as your venue for community service for 5774.

There are many ways that you can be more involved than just being a dues paying member. One simple way is to sponsor a Shabbat oneg to honor the memory of a loved one, or celebrate a special occasion.

Serving on one of AVIV’s committees is another opportunity for you.  All of our committees, such as social, fundraising, and ritual, need more participation and more help.  One new committee will be formed soon.  This committee will help assemble the new AVIV Shabbat prayer book, largely thanks to the successful prayer book fundraising effort of Janice and Chuck Dietz. So far, over $1000 has been raised to print new Shabbat prayer books.

Lastly, volunteering to serve on AVIV’s board of directors is a great community service endeavor.  All nine positions are currently open.  A copy of the AVIV bylaws, accompanies this letter in order for you to review the board member and officer responsibilities.  A copy of the nomination form is also attached.  Deadline for submitting nominations is September 20th.  An active board of directors is essential in order for AVIV to continue to provide both ritual and social events on a regular basis.  Serving on the board is not a multi-year commitment, but an annual event.

Working with other AVIV members on these worthwhile projects is rewarding and a great way to build lifelong friendships.

5773 was a great year for AVIV. We participated in two festivals:  Rainbows Festival and Tu B’Shavat. AVIV of Arizona saw the return of monthly Shabbat services at two Jewish venues, and offered various social events, some of which occurred or will occur at rented venues.  Our visibility in the both the Jewish and LGBT community was also impacted by our renewed participation in the Greater Phoenix Jewish Film Festival. We had a wonderful Passover Seder at REBAR, an evening with an Officer from the IDF, brunches, and happy hour events. AVIV of Arizona also made a permanent mark on a significant Jewish community institution with the installation of a mezuzah at the Arizona Jewish Historical Society.

In addition to more participation, our next challenge is the AVIV of Arizona budget.  The 2014 membership drive will begin on September 1. Dues are the same ($54 for individuals; $108 for couples and family).  Just our membership dues are not enough to cover our expenses.  Tax-deductible donations and fundraising events are also needed in order to AVIV of Arizona to continue offering religious services, hosting social events, and participating in with community events.

As you renew your AVIV of Arizona membership for the coming year, please consider an additional financial contribution to support future events. Please keep an open heart and mind and consider that membership covers only a small portion of AVIV of Arizona's annual operating budget. We thank you for your past and future support ensuring AVIV of Arizona's mission continues into 2014 and beyond.

Membership renewal prior to December 31, 2013 will be appreciated.

(AVIV of Arizona is committed to being accessible to anyone seeking an LGBT Jewish community; financial capacity will never be a barrier to membership and confidential arrangements can be made with our treasurer for those experiencing financial hardships.)

Please join me in keeping AVIV of Arizona active and alive.  You are always welcome to email me at slubisch@avivaz.com
